Agreement Brings Breakthrough

12314077_1070671332995973_3508507785176326580_n“There is power in praying together. Deuteronomy says of God’s army that ‘one man (could) chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight’ (32:30). There is a multiplied effect in being together before God. It was the corporate prayer of Acts 1:14 that produced the corporate power of Acts 2:42-47. Corporate prayer brings corporate power (Acts 4:14-31).” Steve Meeks

God’s heart is that we have agreement and unity in our prayers. The key to power in praying together is a single focus. Agreement in prayer brings breakthrough. We go to a powerful prayer meeting on Wednesdays. The reason it is so powerful is because we are focused on one thing – praying for America. The entire hour is spent in praying everything about our country. We don’t suddenly launch out into something else but we all come with a determined mindset to pray for one thing – our nation. It’s easy to be divided into a million areas when we pray. The needs are so great. But the most powerful prayer meetings are when everyone is in agreement about one thing at a time. We must learn to pray through a request until God moves us on to something else. We are one body with one voice seeking God together.

Agreement in prayer is not a new thing. It is Biblical! In Acts 1:14 we read “they all joined together constantly in prayer” and in 4:14 we read, “they raised their voices together in prayer”. Together is a key that opens the door to the power of God. The King James Bible in Acts 2:1 says “with one accord”. What were the results? – The filling of the Holy Spirit with boldness and Peter’s miraculous release from prison.

To pray together is to dream the dreams of God together.

I don’t know how you feel, but I want to dream the dreams of God together with other like-minded people. It is a huge encouragement when we don’t have to carry a heavy burden alone. God has great plans and His Kingdom is coming to earth. I want to pray His dream with others regarding His Kingdom. I want to agree with others in alignment with His will. Praying in agreement is harmonizing together like a symphony.

When an orchestra is tuning up, everything can sound like a lot of noise – Every instrument is doing it’s own thing – But when the conductor raises his baton, the instruments come together in harmony. That’s how prayer should be when Jesus is the conductor of the meeting.

On Wednesdays I go to a prayer meeting from 6:30 – 7:30 AM with over 100 people praying together, mainly intercessors. It’s great! And there is a beautiful harmony. Last week one person started a spontaneous song and two others continued the song with new verses and in perfect harmony. Every week a prayer theme is continued through the entire hour with one intercessor adding to the prayers of another. There’s direction as everyone prays with one heart and mind under the direction of Jesus, the conductor. This brings encouragement, builds faith, and helps everyone to concentrate. We are all keenly aware of what the Holy Spirit is doing. The harmony keeps us all awake early in the morning! We are agreeing in prayer. We read in Matthew 18:19 in the Amplified Bible:

“Again I tell you, if two of you on earth agree (harmonize together, make a symphony together) about whatever (anything and everything) they may ask, it will come to pass and be done for them by My Father in heaven.”

How to Agree in Prayer

“When you pray in agreement, there is no loophole, no alternate plan, and no changing your mind.”  Elmer Towns

Praying with one another in agreement helps us to bear one another’s burdens. It’s encourages faith and helps us avoid temptation. Here are some ways that will help you to pray in one accord:

  • Pray with a clean heart – You must be in harmony. Make sure there is no unconfessed sin or unforgiveness. “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened” (Psalm 66:18). See John 9:31.
  • Pray with the Holy Spirit’s direction – When you start praying, invite the Holy Spirit to come and direct you in prayer. Look to Him for His guidance, direction, and focus.
  • Pray in agreement with honesty and love – “Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble” (1 Pet. 3:8).
  • Pray God’s will according to Scripture – “And this is the confidence (the assurance, the privilege of boldness) which we have in Him: [we are sure] that if we ask anything (make any request) according to His will (in agreement with His own plan), He listens to and hears us” (1 John 5:14, Amplified). Also see James 4:3 and John 15:7.
  • Pray one subject at a time – You may want to pray back and forth on one topic until you are finished. Remember to stay focused until you are finished with that topic before you move to something else.
  • Pray brief, to-the-point prayers – Long prayers can cause the group to lose focus. You want everyone to participate.
  • Pray with faith and confidence – Believe together that God hears and will answer your prayers. God can do anything. “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14). “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer” (Matthew 21:22). See Hebrews 11:6.
  • Pray with perseverance and urgency – Don’t give up. “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1). Also see Matthew15:21-28.

Why is it so hard to start citywide prayer meetings and Houses of Prayer? The answer is simple. Satan knows the power of agreement in prayer. He knows that if the churches came together in united prayer, the city could be reached for Christ. So he fights it in every way he can. He loves disunity and this is one of his greatest tricks. He always wants to bring division, discord, and broken relationships.

But when there is unity in prayer, there is another outcome. Steve Meeks shares about how praying together in agreement affected his church and city. He says:

“Praying together has been like igniting a spiritual boiler room within our church. The temperature of our faith has risen. Answered prayers are an ongoing experience. We have seen the climate of our unity radically changed. We have entered a stream of God’s activity along with a host of other churches and Christians and pastors’ groups across our city. There is a feeling of oneness among the churches, and practical strategies are developing for the church in Houston to stand ‘firm in one spirit, contending as one man fort the faith of the gospel’ (Philippians 1:27).”

Sometimes one prayer from another perspective can change everything. Occasionally my husband and I go to a Turkey prayer meeting. In one hour we pray a multitude of prayers for that one nation. It’s amazing the variety of prayers there can be prayed for one country. The prayers are direct, to-the-point, and are led by the Holy Spirit. On my own I could never pray from that many perspectives but together there is united wisdom and power.

Perhaps you have heard about the old farmer who drank his first bottle of soda pop while he was heading for the big city on a speeding train. After he took his first sip, the train roared into a dark tunnel. He cried out to his wife, “Don’t drink that soda pop, Martie, it will make you blind as a bat!” The old man had evaluated the situation from his own perspective. He wasn’t really blind. He was in a tunnel and didn’t even know it. We can also have tunnel vision in our prayers. We need one another’s wisdom and perspective.

There was an elderly Midwest couple that apologized to the TV repairman when he came to the door. With red faces they informed him that their TV had no problems at all. “We made a mistake,” they told him. “We put on each other’s eyeglasses.” As Christians, we see the world through our own eyes. We think we see with 20/20 vision but that’s not true. We need one another to see and pray from God’s full perspective. We need one another to pray with the power of God. Snowflakes are very frail all alone, but if enough of them get together they can cause a traffic jam! (http://elbourne.org/sermons)

The Holy Spirit is inviting us to enter into His heart for breakthrough unity. We are living in exciting days. Agreement brings breakthrough. It’s Scriptural and God promises to be present. We read in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” God answers united prayer. As we saw in Matthew 18:19, the Bible says that if two of us agree on earth, it will be done for us by our Father in heaven. That’s a powerful verse. Agreement is the untapped power of believers. Perhaps this is the day we should take hold of God’s untapped formula for breakthrough in prayer! Let’s learn the secret of agreement!

“Agreement is perhaps the untapped power of believers! What would be the results of real agreement among believers? If we will be led into perfect unity with Jesus Christ, having His mind in us so that we think as He would and ask according to his Word (John 15:7), and maintain unobstructed relationships between ourselves, having no resentments or unforgiveness toward others, we would open a channel through which God’s power could flow unobstructed.” Thetus Tenney

The Revelation of Intercession

10322742_1077105805685859_2741149073257546117_n-4“If we as helpers and fellow laborers with the Lord Jesus, are to share His power of intercession, there will need to be with us as well the travail of soul that there was with Him, the giving up of our lives and their pleasures for the one supreme work of interceding for our fellow men. Intercession must not be a passing interest. It must become an ever-growing object of intense desire for which, above everything, we long and live. It is the life of consecration and self-sacrifice that will indeed give power for intercession.” Andrew Murray

There are not many people who understand or realize how important intercession really is. God wants to reveal to each one of us just how powerful intercession is. We need a revelation of the majesty and mystery of intercession. We need God to open the eyes of our heart to this tremendous reality.

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power to us who believe” (Ephesians 1:17-19a).

Intercession is the primary way that God governs the universe. Think about that! God has chosen intercession as the primary means in which he release His (government) power through Jesus and with His people. And He desires us to enter into this highest ministry through intimate partnership with Him. Imagine that for a moment – God wants intimate partnership with you. Not a casual friendship, but intimate and close partnership with the God of the universe, the creator of all!

To be involved in this great ministry of intercession requires our cooperation. God requires us to cooperate with Him in His grace for prayer. God will not do our part and we cannot do His part. If we do not do our part, then God withholds some of the help and blessing He would have given us. He has overflowing blessing and help to give you, and He knows the deep longings and needs in your heart and life. He desires to abundantly bless you, but you must ask and call upon Him. It’s that simple and real.

There is a mystery to intercession. The primary principle of intercession is simply to tell God what He tells us to tell Him as the means of releasing His power. It is profoundly simple. Intercession is God’s brilliant strategy for including the saints in ruling with Him in power. Its mystery is in its weakness, simplicity, humility, and accessibility to all.

God promises to restore the Tabernacle of David. The fullness of God’s promise to restore the Tabernacle of David speaks of the full release of Jesus’ government across all nations in context to worship and intercession. It will only be completely restored in Jesus millennial government based on 24/7 worship.

I will raise up the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down, and repair its damages; I will raise up its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old; that they may possess the remnant of Edom [Islam] and all the Gentiles [harvest in the nations]… I will plant them in their land [May 1948], and no longer shall they be pulled up from the land” (Amos 9:11-15).

There is a majesty to intercession. God has chosen intercession as the primary means in which He releases His power now and forever. Jesus operated in the principle of intercession when He created the earth by speaking the Word to the Father (Genesis 1). He releases His power now and will rule the nations forever in partnership with His people through intercession.

  • Intercession causes us to internalize God’s Word and changes us.
  • Intercession unites our heart to people and places we pray for.
  • Intercession renews our hope and faith.
  • Intercession imparts life (John 6:63).
  • Intercession makes a long-term impact beyond this age (Rev. 5:8, 8:1-6).
  • Intercession humbles us.
  • Intercession changes the spiritual atmosphere of cities and nations.
  • Intercession causes multiple blessings to return to the intercessor (Luke 6:38).

Christ…at the right hand of God, who makes intercession for us” (Romans 8:34).

“He always [forever] lives to make intercession for them”
(Hebrews 7:25).

The Call to Mentor Others in Prayer

996704_1074322559297517_7978261601639723963_n“Intercession! Would one not say that this is the very holiest exercise of our boldness as God’s children? It is the highest privilege and enjoyment connected to our communion with God. It is the power of being used by God as instruments for His great work of making men His habitation and showing forth His glory.” Andrew Murray

The Call to Mentor Others in Prayer

What are some ways to develop the art, skill or mastery of prayer and intercession. What keys do you need for its release?

The art of intercession! It’s so amazing, so vast, so all consuming. Art refers to any skill or mastery. If intercession changes history and nations, how can I master this great occupation? How can I help other master it? What do I need to develop in order to succeed in intercession throughout my entire life? What are the keys to a passionate and fervent life of intercession? How can I help start a House of Prayer in my city and mentor others in this? We long to be wholehearted and passionate. We long to do great things for God. We long to make a deep and lasting impact.

We are called to disciple, motivate, exhort, train and mentor others in prayer. We are influencers for prayer wherever we go. We are forerunners for prayer. We are called to help others to ignite the fire of prayer. God’s Church will become a praying Church. Take hold of this noble task and take it seriously. People want to grow in prayer.

I run into people all the time who are called to intercessors who only hesitantly say they are intercessors. We have to speak into the lives of others. We have to tell them if we feel they are called to pray.

The Intercessors Arise books are designed to help you lead people into a deeper and more fulfilling prayer life:

  • We can’t teach prayer in 3 easy steps. It is much too vast – so many aspects. It’s a beautiful diamond.
  • You must hunger after God passionately yourself and you will model prayer.
  • The Intercessors Arise books are designed to help you personally in your prayer life but to also help you teach and train others.
  • Each book has about 30 motivational teachings on prayer to implement in small group settings. They are highly practical, Biblical, and with lots of stories.
  • Your mentorship will be dynamically unique as you guide discussions on the topic of prayer and intercession.
  • There are assignments to bring out the teachings of that chapter so it is all set out before you. You can adapt it to your particular situation.
  • You will be able to practice what you are learning in your prayer meetings.
  • You can go as fast or slow as the Lord leads your particular group.
  • You can teach and preach this material to larger groups and churches.
  • You are part of a wider network of intercessors. Never forget this. God is uniting all of us as intercessors. There is a strength to unity.
  • On the Intercessors Arise and Nations House of Prayer Equipping Center web sites, you can find many additional tools you can use for mentoring others in prayer.

“Of what infinite importance is the place the intercessor holds in the Kingdom of God! Is it not indeed a matter of wonder that God should give men such power? Yet there are so few who know what it is to take hold of His strength and pray down His blessing on the world.” Andrew Murray

Our Prayer for Advancing God’s Glory

11745506_994913623905078_347660899437159992_nLord, please bring transformation into our lives through the prayer movement and a House of Prayer in our city. We want to see Your glory advance in our lives. Bring us into intimacy and the simplicity of pure devotion to You
(2 Corinthians 11:3). Help us to cultivate a love relationship with You.

Help us as the Church in [Name your city] find our identity in You. Teach us to walk in Your love and Your holiness. Make us attractive to the lost in our city. Show us how to advance Your glory in practical ways that demonstrate the love of Christ. Remove everything that hinders love in our lives, and establish Your dwelling place here in our city and all over the earth (Psalm 132:2-5). We accept Your invitation to greatness. We long for Your fragrance and want to learn humility, love, and holiness in our lives. Help us to obey the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 57.

Your Word says in Matthew 5:3-10: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Help us to practice the Beatitudes in our daily lives. We want to be great in Your Kingdom.

Use us to advance Your glory here on earth through Houses of Prayer. Bring transformation into our lives. We pray Psalm 24 over our city: Lord, the whole earth is Yours. You founded it! You deserve to be honored. Your Word needs to be proclaimed. We desire a visitation of Your promised Holy Spirit to open the windows of heaven and show forth Your powerful works. Create in us clean hearts. Give us clean hands. Let the ancient gates be lifted up that You, King of glory, may come in. Lord, give us wisdom for our House of Prayer in the spirit of holiness, in a way that would utilize the resources that You have already put within us. May we hear from Your SpiritHe is our director, counselor, and helper. Send Him to stir our hearts right now we pray. We invite Your presence into our midst. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Verse to Memorize

“And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

God’s Invitation to Greatness

11350730_964162653646842_5075270704824904057_nAnyone who breaks one of the least of these command-ments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:19).

Establishing a House of Prayer in your church or city is pursuing greatness in God’s sight. You are involved in one of the greatest things you can ever do for God. He wants to transform our thinking so we understand His invitation to greatness.

Think about itwhat do we really wantfame before man or before God?

Lasting greatness is not in the praise of man but in the affirmation of God. He has placed within our heart a longing for greatness. He looks at the heart; He looks at our obedience and motives. He sees our hidden heart (1 Samuel 16:7). He sees what we do in secret, in the hidden place of prayer. Jesus wants to unlock our hearts and minds so that we are fully alive in Him. This is how he will reward us
(Matthew 6:6). Most of what we do now will not be fully known until the age to come.

When we build a House of Prayer, we are building upon a foundation that cannot be shaken (1 Corinthians 3:11-15). We are pursuing greatness in God’s sight. When we all stand before the judgment seat of Christ, we will be judged by the motives of our hearts and the established thought patterns behind our actions. God is evaluating our hearts. Moses prayed: “Now, show me your glory” (Exodus 33:18). He understood the true meaning and purpose of life. When we meet God face-to-face, He will ask:

  • How much did you seek me?
  • How much did you love others?
  • How much did you let me transform your heart?

Let God measure the success of what we do. He is looking for faithfulness (Luke 16:10-12; 1 Corinthians 4:2) and relationship (Matt. 7:23; Luke 10:20). We must be faithful stewards as we pray and prepare our Houses of Prayer. Our goal is to help prepare the Bride for her destiny (Ephesians 5:22-27). Our identity is found in being a friend of the Bridegroom.

He must increase, and we must decrease.

We do not possess the fragrance of Jesus through education or money. God is raising up the uneducated and unknown to turn the world upside down (1 Corinthians 1:27-29). The power of the Kingdom will not come through the best training programs in the world. It will come through those who train in the desert, in that secret place of prayer. Moses had the best training in the world (Hebrews 11:24). He was the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, but he needed forty years in the desert. Daniel had the best education, but it was in the secret place where he became wiser than all the wise men of Babylon. He was steadfast and prayed three times a day, even when it endangered his life. Nothing—absolutely nothing—could hinder his commitment to prayer, not even a den of lions!

In Acts 4:13-16 we see that the boldness of Peter and John arises from their time spent with Jesus. Others realized this and marveled. They were uneducated and untrained, yet their lives were ones of power. These men had the vision and commitment to pray and spend time with God. They accepted God’s invitation to greatness.

As we wait for the coming of God’s Kingdom, we can walk in that same power, but we must see with the eyes of vision God’s great invitation to us. We must have hearts of commitment to pray and advance the prayer movement. We need to believe that God wants to spread Houses of Prayer throughout the entire world. We must have vision for our city and our church.

God is inviting us to greatness in His Kingdom.

Growing in Intimacy and the Knowledge of God

11390094_968828946513546_3817218908514737680_n-2How do we grow in intimacy and in the knowledge of God?

He must reveal Himself to us, and He does it as we behold Jesus in the prayer room (Matthew 11:27; 2 Corinthians 4:6; Colossians 1:19; 2:2-3, 9; Hebrews 1:1-3). God wants us filled with fiery love and desire for Him, and the prayer room is the perfect place to cultivate this transformational love relationship. What we behold of God’s heart, we become.

Our identity is in Jesus. We discover who we are and what is our worth and destiny by encountering His heart for us in the prayer room. We become successful as lovers of God, and we begin to measure our success in an entirely new way. Imagine what will happen in our cities when God’s people begin to measure success in this way. There will be no more envy and competition. We will be seeking God and His ways, not ours.

“If the believer would enter into a better, deeper, fuller knowledge of God he must prayerfully study the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ as revealed in the Scriptures! Let this be made our chief business, our great delight, to reverently scrutinize and meditate upon the excellencies of our Divine Savior as they are displayed upon the pages of Holy writ. Then, and only then, shall we ‘increase in the knowledge of God’. The ‘light of the knowledge of the glory of God’ is seen only ‘in the face of Jesus Christ.’”

When we prayerfully adore and study the person and work of Christ in the prayer room and live obedient lives, we grow in intimacy. This is not studying academically, but it is more a drinking in of the beauty of Christ, just as we would behold a beautiful landscape. We fix our attention and affection upon Christ. We listen carefully—we hear—we behold—we gaze in stillness upon Christ and are transformed into His likeness. We use Scripture as we do this, and we give God our time.

Jesus must be our focal point; our hearts will be unsatisfied if He isn’t. He must be central in our study, devotion, and discipleship. We must be dynamically connected to Him. We are His inheritance and delight (Song of Solomon 7:10; Romans 14:8; 1 Corinthians 3:23; 6:15-20).

God is using prayer to help prepare and purify His Church all across the earth. Remember that a House of Prayer in your city will help prepare Christians to live fully for God. He is using prayer to sanctify and cleanse His people, making her a Church filled with His glory.

The Church is like the transformed butterfly emerging from its cocoon. In the prayer room we learn to abide by dialoging with God and listening attentively to the Holy Spirit actively within us. He gives us wisdom and direction, and empowers us to live the Christian life. We are developing a heart connection with the Holy Spirit and are learning the reality of John 15:5-7. Without Him we can do nothing, but with Him we bear much fruit. In the prayer room we cultivate a transformed heart. God is developing a beautiful butterfly and teaching us to fly.

God is right now releasing grace to pray, and develop intimacy and love. He is releasing grace to develop Houses of Prayer in every nation. He is positioning our hearts by the fire of His love as we read and pray His Word back to Him. He is helping his people to cultivate a secret history with Himself. God is in the process of transforming our hearts in the prayer room. The Church will be a worshiping and praying Church. The Church will walk in unity with God’s Spirit, and she will be anointed with power as she intercedes and establishes herself in her bridal identity.

Through prayer we open the windows of heaven over our city. We prepare a place for the Lord to dwell individually, corporately, and geographically as we invite the presence of Jesus to come. He will one day wipe away every tear. There will be a new heaven and earth, and the tabernacle of God will be with men.

  • This is what we are preparing for.
  • This is what we anticipate and look forward to.
  • This is what we are living for today as we prepare Houses of Prayer in every nation, city, and people group.

In humility, we lay our desires before the Lord and ask according to His will the things that are on His heart for us. God gives grace to those who walk in humility (James 4:6). We learn to embrace the cross and the humility of God as the normal Kingdom lifestyle (Matthew 16:24; 1 Corinthian 1:18-31). We commit our entire being to honor Him and His cause, and we lay the needs of our city and church into His hands. We seek after those things that glorify Him. We take steps to live in His presence and bring our values into agreement with His Word. We seek His favor and not the world’s (James 4:4-5). And though there are time delays, we wait and trust in His timetable. He will answer at the perfect time. He knows what is best and His ways are perfect. We boast in Him and not in our own strength and abilities (Jeremiah 9:23-29).

There are so much transformation within our hearts as we grow in intimacy and the knowledge of God.

Our Prayer for God’s Kingdom in our City

11694990_990317657698008_1380555052200191595_n

Lord, we want Your Kingdom purposes for [Name your city]. Help us to see our city from Your perspective. We pray for day and night prayer. Give us eyes of faith and a vision to see what You can do. Raise up Your Church here, and break through every divisive barrier that is keeping us apart. Revive the churches, and make them an influence in our neighbor-hoods and places of work. Help us all to work together towards a one-month House of Prayer [Pray your specific vision for your city]. Teach us to lay down our personal agendas and see the big picture of what You want to do here. Invade our city with Your glorious presence and Your Kingdom purposes. Help our city grow in trust, wisdom, relational unity, love, worship, Kingdom building, simplicity, and in seeking Your presence.

Teach us how to prepare every detail for a House of Prayer here. Give us Your wisdom as to where we should have it. Give us Your creativity in decorating the prayer room. We pray for favor with Your people as we spread the vision. We believe this is Your will. Break through every obstacle, and show us the steps we need to take. Lay a burden on our hearts to pray together for our city. Bring a core group of people together to pray towards this House of Prayer. Give us Your wisdom and Your heart for united intercession.

We are desperate for Your presence. We welcome you here. Come and dwell among us. Let our city bring You renown, joy, praise and honor before all nations on earth that hear of all the good things You do for it; and let them be in awe and tremble at the abundant prosperity and peace You provide for it (Jeremiah 33:9). In Jesus’ name, amen.

Verse to Memorize

“Then this city will bring me renown, joy, praise and honor before all nations on earth that hear of all the good things I do for it; and they will be in awe and will tremble at the abundant prosperity and peace I provide for it” (Jeremiah 33:9).
